Supporting Pipeline Operations for 30+ Years
EnerSys Corporation, founded in 1994, was started in the mid-1990s as a custody transfer measurement consultancy. As technology and industry needs evolved, EnerSys added capabilities in telemetry, data communications, and SCADA. EnerSys eventually evolved into a control systems integration company providing automation, telemetry, SCADA, and measurement solutions to oil and gas operators.
Since its inception, EnerSys has been recognized as an industry leader in control room and operating best practice.
In 2007, EnerSys realized that change was coming to pipeline control rooms in the form of new federal regulatory requirements from the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) requiring pipeline operators to put formal control room management (CRM) programs in place. The essential elements of this requirement are:
- Documented control room procedures.
- Alarm management.
- Adequate information (e.g. High Performance HMI displays for situational awareness).
- Fatigue mitigation.
- Incident reporting and Controller training.
Our research into the proposed PHMSA CRM Rule led us to form relationships with experts outside the pipeline industry to learn from their process industry best practices and adapt them to the unique requirements of pipeline operations.
The decision we made was to confidently focus our full effort on researching, designing, creating, and implementing a full suite of pipeline operations application software, starting with the control room. This family of products was named the Pipeline Operations Excellence Management System (POEMS®).
The goal was to deliver POEMS® as a complete software solution for pipeline operators to implement and then operate a high-performance control room, provide Natural Compliance with the latest government regulations, improve security and functionality, and create actionable processes for operators and users.
In 2020, EnerSys formed a joint venture with Muddy Boots online to become the exclusive US channel for Muddy Boots. Muddy Boots added the ability to support field operations and improve coordination of control room and field activities. Muddy Boots supports over 400 different activities across a range of operations and maintenance activities. In 2023, Muddy Boots released new capabilities to support API compliant capabilities for measurement techs in the field.
In 2020, EnerACT Energy Services, Inc. (EnerACT) the parent company of EnerSys acquired PI Confluence and its software tools aimed at integrity management, damage prevention, public awareness and stakeholder engagement. In 2024, PI Confluence was merged into EnerSys, and the Program Suite was merged into the EnerSys POEMS offering.
The EnerSys team continues to leverage its 30+ years providing oil and gas operators with innovative and value-added solutions to help pipeline operators operate more efficiently, safely, and in compliance with the latest PHMSA regulations to achieve confidence beyond compliance.
